[Updated on August 12, 2023 at 3:58 p.m.] This Saturday August 12 and Sunday August 13, 2023, it is an opportunity to observe the celestial vault which promises a beautiful spectacle if the sky is clear with the peak of activity of the Perseids, particularly bright shooting stars. If its activity began, as every year, on July 17, it will end on August 24. This meteor shower will be intense this weekend with up to 100 meteors per hour visible overnight from Saturday to Sunday with one shooting star per minute. To make the most of the event, you will have to look up at the sky after sunset, around 10:30 p.m., in order to take advantage of a dark sky. As the New Moon will occur on August 16, viewing the Perseids will be in ideal conditions. Indeed, our satellite will appear as a very thin crescent that will not interfere with observing them with its brightness.

No danger or need for special equipment! Shooting stars are visible to everyone with the naked eye. So there’s no need to get out the binoculars or the telescope, given the high speed at which fireballs pass through the Earth’s atmosphere (an average of 50 km/second). About a quarter of shooting stars leave visible trails for several seconds. To be able to observe a shower of shooting stars in an optimal way, the sky must not be obscured by clouds, or by light pollution.
