Netflix has announced the upcoming release of a reality TV program inspired by the hit South Korean series. This is already controversial.
“Squid Game” in real life: the concept is terrifying. Yet Netflix did it. “Squid Game: The Challenge” is a reality TV series inspired by the hit South Korean series. This Friday, September 22, the streaming platform shared the first trailer for this show, in which 456 people from all over the world (who are obviously not fictional characters) compete to win 4.56 million dollars (approximately 4.28 million euros).
If the series takes up the concept of “Squid Game”, there are some happy differences. Unlike the streaming platform’s phenomenon series, participants do not (fortunately) die in the event of defeat.
But then, what does this have to do with the South Korean series? Participants will have to face challenges inspired by the original series. We will thus find the terrifying doll from season 1, but also other new events.
This reality TV concept inspired by “Squid Game” caused controversy before its release on Netflix. If some questioned the merits of producing a reality TV on a series which denounces such excesses, the filming had also sparked controversy.
Several participants revealed to The Sun that it would have taken place in extreme conditions. Several people would have needed medical assistance during an ordeal, which took place in an air hangar in the middle of winter, in the United Kingdom. According to Variety, some candidates fainted due to fatigue and cold.
The production then denied it, ensuring that it “takes the health of our candidates and our team very seriously, as does the quality of the series”. “Any allegations that the competition is rigged or that participants are in serious danger are simply false. We have taken all necessary safety measures,” she added.
“Squid Game: The Challenge” is coming soon to Netflix. The streaming platform has announced that the episodes of this reality TV will be put online on November 22, 2023 in France.
