Cat is out of the bag! Olivia Colman shocked fans by her surprise appearance in Netflix’s new series Heartstopper. It premiered Friday, April 22.
Netflix kept the casting news of the Emmy-winning actress, 48, under wraps until the premiere. Colman was cast as actor Kit Connor’s mom.
“We didn’t know who was going to be playing my mum for most of the shoot” Connor, 18, said in an interview with Hello. We had the opportunity to film together for two days. It was just me and her, and it was an incredible and enlightening experience. It’s an honor to be able work with Oscar winners of this caliber.
The A-list reveal was a pleasant surprise to fans who took to social media to share their excitement.
“Olivia Colman turning out in #Heartstopper was my Andrew Garfield no Way Home moment,” a fan stated after watching the series.
“#heartstopperspoilers SOBBING AT THE FACT THAT OLIVIA COLMAN IS NICK’S MUM I LOVE THEIR DYNAMIC SO MUCH AND WATCHING OLIVIA AND KIT ACT OPPOSITE EACH OTHER IS A TREAT,” another Twitter user wrote.
Heartstopper star Joe Locke — the onscreen boyfriend of Connor, Charlie Spring in the Netflix hit — shared his excitement over the Fleabag actress’ role.
He wrote Friday on his Instagram account, “Olivia Colman”
Heartstopper is a Alice Oseman webcomic that was turned into a novel about two teenage boys who fall in love and struggle to navigate the world of adolescence.
The show’s heart lies in the relationships between the boys. Fans couldn’t contain their joy after seeing Coleman perform a role in young queer content.
“I swear, nothing made my gay heart beat more than seeing Olivia Colman appear at the end the #Heartstopper premier” one fan tweeted.
“Not Olivia being a queer teenager mom!” another added.
The Crown has an actress who appears in the romantic comedy about a coming-of-age romance in a supporting part throughout eight episodes. This includes the final scene in which Nick Nelson, Connor’s character, comes out to his mother that he is bisexual.
“We were reading [the scene] out loud, and suddenly a tear drops down her eye. We were only giving 50 %!,” to the Rocketman actor. This was an interview that The Gay Times conducted on April 22. “And I was just thinking, “Oh, god! I’m going to have to step up now!”
