VENICE MOSTRA 2023. The Venice Mostra film festival opens this Wednesday in a stormy context.

[Updated August 29, 2023 at 9:00 a.m.] The Venice Film Festival is embarking on a very special 80th edition. The prestigious film festival returns to animate the streets of Venice this Wednesday, August 30, 2023 until September 9. And as much to say that this 80th edition will be scrutinized by lovers of the seventh art.

First of all, the official selection of this Venice Film Festival provoked strong criticism. The event has indeed decided to screen the works of several filmmakers accused of sexual violence, such as Roman Polanski or Woody Allen, whose latest achievements are presented out of competition. Luc Besson’s latest film, DogMan is also screened in official competition. Recall that, in this last case, the Court of Cassation decided to definitively dismiss Sand Van Roy’s rape charges on June 21. In these three cases, the filmmakers deny the accusations against them.

Due to the strike of actors and screenwriters in Hollywood, who are protesting against the use of artificial intelligence in their professions and demanding higher salaries, the 80th Venice Film Festival will see very few stars walk its red carpet. It will therefore not be necessary to count on the American actors of the films in competition, such as Jessica Chastain or Michael Fassbender. It should be noted, however, that Michael Mann’s film Ferrari, with Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz in the cast, benefited from an exemption from the actors’ union, and that we could therefore see its stars parading in Venice. Anyway, it will be a much less glamorous festival

The Venice Film Festival is an Italian film festival that annually rewards the best of the international seventh art. It is also an opportunity to preview some of the most anticipated films of the end of the year, whether auteur films or blockbusters. The Venice Film Festival takes place every year at the end of summer. The 2023 edition of the international film festival in this Italian city begins on Wednesday August 30, 2023 and will end on September 9, 2023 with the announcement of the complete winners.

Among the films presented out of competition last year, we note the screenings of Coup de chance by Woody Allen, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar by Wes Anderson, Hitman by Richard Linklater or The Palace by Roman Polanski. The presence of films by Woody Allen, Roman Polanski and Luc Besson, all three targeted by accusations of sexual violence, did not fail to cause controversy.

The Venice Film Festival takes place over ten days. The event traditionally kicks off with a first screening at 4:00 p.m. on the first day of the festival, before the early evening screening of the opening film that same day. The event ends ten days later with the winners revealed. Find the complete program of the Venice Film Festival on the official website of the festival.

As is the case for the Cannes Film Festival, the Venice Film Festival rewards the favorite films of a jury made up of professionals from the international seventh art. The 2023 festival jury is chaired by filmmaker Damien Chazelle (La La Land, Babylon). In order to establish the prize list, he is supported by the Palestinian actor Saleh Bakri, the director Jane Campion (The piano lesson), the French director Mia Hansen-Love, the Italian director Gabriele Mainetti, the British director Martin McDonagh, the Argentinian director Santiago Mitre, American director Laura Poitras and Taiwanese actress Shu Qi.

It is possible to go to the Venice Film Festival as a spectator. It should be noted that cinema professionals, but also the press, can request accreditation to attend screenings free of charge. The public can for its part buy tickets to attend the screenings of certain prizes. Prices vary between 7 and 50 euros per screening depending on the rooms and times. It is also possible to subscribe to a “per room” subscription: this can vary from 35 to 1600 euros depending on the schedule, the room or the location in the room. Find all the information regarding registration and the purchase of tickets for the Venice Film Festival on the official website of the festival.

For the moment, we do not know the winners of the Mostra de Venise 2023. Last year, the winners of the Mostra de Venise were returned on September 10, 2022. The Golden Lion had rewarded the documentary film “All the beauty and the bloodshed” by Laura Poitras, while the French Alice Diop won the Silver Lion-Grand Jury Prize for “Saint Omer”. Luca Guadagnino was awarded the prize for best director. On the interpretation side, Cate Blanchett, Colin Farrell and Taylor Russell had been awarded. Below, the complete winners of the last edition of the Venice Film Festival.
