The CNC has announced the five finalist films to represent France at the next edition of the Oscars. Check out the list.

There are only five left who can claim to represent France at the Oscar for best foreign film. The CNC revealed, on September 13, the finalists selected by a special commission to compete in the American awards ceremony. Among the five contenders for the title, we find “Anatomy of a Fall” by Justine Triet, “Goutte d’or” by Clément Cogitore, “The Passion of Dodin Bouffant” by Tran Anh Hung, “The Animal Kingdom” by Thomas Cailley and “On the Black Paths” by Denis Imbert.

One of these five films is already the big favorite to represent France at the Oscars. It is “Anatomy of a Fall”, which already won the Palme d’Or at the last Cannes Film Festival. The feature film is currently visible in theaters and has already aroused the curiosity of 600,000 curious people in France. Let us remember, however, that this is not the only Cannes film among the finalists, since “The Passion of Dodin Bouffant” also won the Best Director Prize last May.

The name of the film which will represent France at the Oscars will soon be known. It will be unveiled by the CNC on September 21. But how is the lucky one chosen? Seven cinema professionals (two exporters, two producers, two directors and “a qualified person”, here Alexandre Desplat, film composer) are responsible for establishing a list and designating which film has the best chance of being selected for the Oscars.

Because, if one of these five films will soon be chosen by the French commission, that does not mean that it will automatically be in competition for the Oscar ceremony. The film will be submitted for the Oscar for best foreign film, but will have to go through several selection phases: the Academy of Oscars announces 15 feature films selected on December 21. After that, it will be January 23, 2024 that we will know the five films in competition for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Voters will then have several weeks to elect the lucky winner, who will be announced during the Oscars ceremony on March 10, 2024.
