It was bransjebladet Book and the society that first talked about the case.

book club hit especially in the spotlight of media attention when Cappelen Damm in may of last year went to the purchase of the rights to the Durek Verretts book “Spirit Hacking”, with plans to give it out through the Energica – before the in October went to the extraordinary step to stop the release.

In a press release, the stated that the book’s content raised “significant ethical questions that are relevant for Cappelen Damm as a publisher”.

the Newspaper had several articles written about the massive criticism from medical professionals against the content in the book. Dagbladet reviewer Cathrine Kroger was also not impressed, and rolled a one on the dice.

the Crazy man’s speech

the Book was later released on the Publisher Little Moon – with small adjustments in the most controversial sections.

Not recoverable

president and Ceo Tom Harald Jenssen at Cappelen Damm say that the background for the decision is that the club simply was not recoverable anymore.

This has been a bokklubb who have developed books, when there has been a limited selection to buy from other publishers. Sales of releases in other channels than the club has been, so to speak, negligibly, ” he says to Dagbladet.

Membership could simply no longer defend Energicas comprehensive release schedule, ” he explains.

They gave out about 20 books a year. In the fall of 2019, we decided that the club should be shut down, due to the further reduction in membership.

– Was the book to Durek Verrett, and all the controversy around, the nail in the coffin for the Energica?

– No, it had only to do with the declining membership. There was no context there.

– you Had a hope that Verretts book could save Energica?

– Such was not. It is not such a bokklubb works – it is a larger machine than a single book.

Jenssen also rejects the money the publisher lost the rights to the Verretts book, was a contributory factor.

Gives out Durek-book

– There we have the backbone to be able to handle, ” he says.

fierce competition

Medieforsker Tore Slaatta, said that the competition in the publishing industry is hard, both when it comes to titles about alternative medicine and non-fiction in general. He believes, however, not the dismantling of the Energica has direct correlation with the book to Verrett.

– You can’t say that this happened because of the Durek-the book – but perhaps made them aware that there are omdømmekostnader related to this type of releases, he says to Dagbladet.

Jenssen answer Slaatta:

– Cappelen Damm is Norway’s largest publishing houses. We are giving out over a thousand titles annually, and our books being discussed externally and internally the whole time. We are to generate the type of discussion, and we should initiate debates and lay the basis for discussions.

Slaatta also believe that the cut may be an attempt to secure earnings by increasing the bestselgerfokuset.

To change the Durek-book

– the Number of releases in the Uk have gone sharply up in recent 20 years, and it implies that the earnings per title goes down. One strategy to increase profitability is to cut the titles. But then you have to choose away the correct titles.

Jenssen reject that Cappelen Damm uses of such a strategy.

– We want to strengthen Cappelen Damms position as Norway’s largest and most important publishing houses. Therefore, we will still bet on the development and dissemination of knowledge and good stories in all formats.

Energicas low medlemsnivå need not, however, mean that alternative medicine is becoming less popular. It mean doctor Wasim Zahid.

One interpretation is that people are becoming more critical and skeptical, and have less faith in alternative therapies. But it may also be that the increasing number of people find information in other channels, not least through the internet. What we see here could also be that the traditional bokmediet has declined in general, he says to Dagbladet.

He is not convinced that the declining interest for the book club due to the fact that fewer read about, or use of, alternative medicine.

When I go to the bookstore, I see that such books are still to be found in the shelves, with varying degrees of absurd claims. There is apparently constantly a market for them.

He believes the younger generation is more sceptical about alternative medicine than their parents.

– They lean more on rationality and what we call evidence-based medicine. It bodes well for the future, that we have a rising generation that is more critical. The age group of 50 to 70 seems at times to be less kildekritiske. But it is my impression – and not evidence-based.

– nonsense

Biologiprofessor Kristian Gundersen has previously criticized Cappelen Damm for statements on the publisher’s web pages, where they apparently went good for the claims that Anthony William be able to put “very special diagnoses” through communication with a “higher dimension”.

That there now may be fewer books about alternative medicine in this country, seems he is completely OK.

– It is wasted time and wasted money, so I think that’s positive. But it is freedom of speech here in the country, and we must hold high, ” he says to Dagbladet.

Any undocumented medical claims must meet in open debate, he believes.

But there are limits to what one can write of helsepropaganda, and not least, how one can promote it,

the Commercialization of alternative medicine is a widespread problem, he believes.

– This is anti-learning. It is positive if there is less of this, so we can concentrate on more important things. There is enough nonsense in the world as it is.
