The South Carolina native played Levee from the November 2020 movie, which also starred Viola Davis.
The Black Panther star kept his cancer diagnosis a key while filming, along with his publicist confirmed to Us Weekly he progressed from stage III colon cancer in 2016 to point IV.
“It’s with immeasurable grief we confirm the departure of Chadwick Boseman,” the September 2020 statement read. “A genuine fighter, Chadwick persevered through all of it, and brought you lots of the films you’ve come to love so much. By Marshall into Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and many more, all were filmed during and involving innumerable surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honour of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther. He died in his home, with his spouse, [Taylor Simone Ledward], and family by his side.”
The 21 Bridges star has been nominated for several posthumous awards this year, by a Gotham Award into a Film Independent Spirit Award.
While virtually taking her late husband’s award in the former past month, Ledward, 30, called Boseman”the most honest person” she had ever met.
“As an artist, a performer and a individual, Chad made a custom of telling the truth,” the musician said in January. “He did not just stop at speaking the truth. He actively searched for it in himself, in those around him and in the moment. The truth can be a very easy thing for your own self to prevent, but if somebody does not reside in truth, then it is impossible to live in line with a divine purpose to your life. And so, it became how he lived his entire life, day in, day out, immaculate but determined.”
Ledward cried, concluding, “Chad, thank you. I adore you. I am quite proud of you. Keep shining your light .”
Boseman shares his Golden Globes category with fellow nominees Riz Ahmed from Audio of Metal, Anthony Hopkins from The Father, Gary Oldman out of Mank and Tahar Rahim from The Mauritanian.
