In the world of reality dating shows, The Dating Game once seemed innocent. A woman would ask three hidden suitors questions, pick one, and go out with him. However, in the episode that aired on Sept. 13, 1978, the winning suitor turned out to be a serial killer named Rodney Alcala. He was later convicted of seven murders, including that of a 12-year-old girl, with authorities speculating he could have killed up to 100 women.

Anna Kendrick plays the role of Sheryl in the film Woman of the Hour, based on this chilling true story. Kendrick shared that she felt emotionally connected to the material and was drawn to the larger themes explored in the film. She highlighted a scene where subtle creepy vibes were portrayed, emphasizing the terrifying nature of the story.

Rodney Alcala, known as the “Dating Game Killer,” appeared on The Dating Game in 1978, introduced as a successful photographer. Despite his creepy responses during the show, the bachelorette, Cheryl Bradshaw, chose him as her date. However, Bradshaw got a strange feeling when she met Alcala in person and declined his offer to go out.

Alcala’s criminal history included child molestation, murders, and sexual assaults. His victims included Cornelia Crilley, Ellen Jane Hover, Jill Barcomb, and Charlotte Lamb, among others. Despite being sentenced to death multiple times, Alcala’s convictions were overturned before DNA evidence finally led to his reconviction and sentencing in 2010.

Rodney Alcala spent the rest of his life behind bars and passed away in July 2021. His death brought closure to many of his victims and their families. The film Woman of the Hour, inspired by this haunting true story, is now available for streaming on Netflix.
