May 1st is one of the least worked days of the year, with a very large number of employees taking advantage of this public holiday. And it hasn’t escaped anyone’s notice: many stores don’t open that day. Most non-food businesses and mass distribution stores such as Auchan, Carrefour, Intermarché, Leclerc and Cora close their doors on May 1st.
Likewise, administrative buildings are closed, while parks and gardens must remain open. As for florists, Labor Day corresponds each year to a very important day for their turnover: around 7 million euros each year.
Throughout France, most major retail brands are closing, including DIY and decoration businesses such as Leroy Merlin, Castorama, Jardiland, Gamm vert or Gifi, but exceptional openings can be made on a case-by-case basis depending on the region in which one you are in. Check if your store is open.
