This Tuesday, September 27, the judicial authorities in charge of the case announced that the Colombian singer was going to be tried for tax evasion. The date of the trial, which will take place in the Barcelona Provincial Court, has yet to be set. At the end of July, the Spanish prosecution had requested more than eight years in prison against the Colombian singer, whom it accuses of tax evasion. Justice accuses the star of not having paid his taxes in Spain between 2011 and 2014, while she was residing there, according to her. However, the proceedings only concern the period 2012-2014, the facts dating back to 2011 being already time-barred. Total amount alleged? 14.5 million euros.
Shakira had lived in Spain since 2011, with footballer Gerard Piqué, from whom she separated in June 2022. She would, however, have maintained her tax residence in the Bahamas Islands, considered a tax haven, until 2015. For her part, the The singer’s defense estimates that over the period indicated, the largest share of her income came from her international tours. Shakira’s lawyers assure that she did not live more than six months a year in Spain, the condition to be tax resident in the country.
Faced with these accusations, the Colombian singer denies the facts and wishes to go to trial. “Absolutely certain of her innocence”, Shakira “does not accept an agreement” with the prosecution “and decides to continue” the procedure until the trial, had indicated her advice in a press release, assuring that the star was “confident in the fact that justice will prove him right.”
