The first dog to have been tested positive for the coronavirus in the United States is dead, reports the National Geographic magazine, after having experienced symptoms apparently similar to those of many humans.

Buddy, a German shepherd seven years old, had fallen ill in April, at about the same time when its owner Robert Mahoney was recovering himself for the Covid-19, indicated the magazine this week. Buddy seemed to have a stuffy nose and breathing difficulties, and his condition has continued to deteriorate over the weeks.

Robert Mahoney and his wife, Allison, who live in New York city, have finally decided to euthanize the dog on July 11, when Buddy began vomiting clots of blood, to have blood in his urine and unable to walk. The family told National Geographic have suspected he had the disease but that it had been difficult to confirm. “Without a shadow of a doubt, I thought (Buddy) was positive,” said his master.

Little risk of passing it on to owners

But not only several veterinarians in his area were closed due to the pandemic, some were also sceptical about the possibility that an animal catches the Covid-19.

the clinic was finally able to confirm that Buddy was infected, and that the other family pet, a 10 month old puppy who had never been sick, had antibodies to the virus.
