In his new book, The Time of storms (The Observatory, 2020), the former president looks back on his first two years in office and book some secrets.
During the confinement, some have decided to change my life, career, spouse… Nicolas Sarkozy, confined in his residence in the Cape Negro, he has begun writing his memoirs. In a book surprise of 523 pages, entitled The Time of Storms (Editions of the Observatory), which was released in bookstores on July 24, the “retired” from public life, recounts her memories of the political, but also personal, since its first day, the head of the country, on may 16, 2017, until the economic crisis of 2008 (the result will be the subject of a second volume).
The former president of the Republic tells the story of both the behind-the-scenes diplomatic negotiations that his intimate life – his divorce and her remarriage -, concedes some mistakes, justified a lot of decisions, and scratch the passage number of opponents. Selected pieces :
The”warning” of Dominique Strauss-Kahn :
“I didn’t know any of her private life and its practices,” says from the outset, the former president, on the subject of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, to whom he devotes four pages. Named by his care, and at the request of the interested party, the president of the international monetary Fund (IMF), Nicolas Sarkozy said that he had sent to the socialist a “first serious warning” following the revelation of his affair with an economist from the Hungarian, who had shocked the United States.

“I received this opportunity at the Elysée. Not to make him the legal entity (…) but to tell him that he must take care, because it would not have a second chance, and that he was going to end by all of us penalize. His answer was unambiguous : “I tell you the guaranteed. I made a mistake… I’m done with my shit”, replies DSK.
Nicolas Sarkozy regret this appointment ? “If it was to do over again, I wouldn’t do this again. But how could I predict such a flow, this fall may not, at bottom, that amount to ‘suicide’ unconscious ?”
The”error” (shape) of the Dakar speech

In his book, Nicolas Sarkozy is also on his speech in Dakar (Senegal) in July 2007. At the time, a phrase from the new president had created a controversy : “colonisation was a fault, but the tragedy of Africa also comes from Africa… The african man is not sufficiently entered history.”
Nicolas Sarkozy assumes the general idea. “On the merits, I would deny,” he wrote. “I still believe today that Africa has a share of responsibility for its own misfortune.”
Politically, on the other hand, Nicolas Sarkozy, said that he was surprised by the controversy, and confesses a “mistake”. “I have to recognize that I’m back all alone in the trap of politics that my opponents wanted to see me fall,” he says. “I really wanted to say ? Have I said too frankly, or too brutally, or both ? (…) It was a mistake. How the contest ?”
He concludes : “I regret even more that I deeply love Africa and Africans.”
The warning to Emmanuel Macron about François Bayrou
In his book, Nicolas Sarkozy, provides a portrait of little appreciative of the mayor of Pau. “I confess that I have felt a real difficulty with the idea obviously flattering that he has of himself”, ” he says about his rival centrist in the presidential election of 2007. “I always wondered what made him think that his opinions were so valuable,” squeaks the former tenant of the Elysee. Under his pen, François Bayrou is described as a man “persuaded to be the next president of the Republic”. “There is, despite everything, had something moving to see such a deep lack of realism”, says Nicolas Sarkozy. “There is Ségolène Royal François Bayrou”, slip the one in which the reference to the socialist is not a compliment.

The “betrayal” of Cecilia
In one of the numerous passages relating to his private life, Nicolas Sarkozy evokes in detail his divorce with Cécilia Sarkozy, in October 2007, while it has été elected president of the Republic for a few months, and that the absence of his wife at his side caught the attention of all.
“The family life had become untenable. Cecilia did not want to do anything, even saving the appearances had become impossible,” wrote Nicolas Sarkozy. He then tells how the president of the house of the family of the tribunal de grande instance of Nanterre comes to the Elysée palace in the greatest of secrets to pronounce the divorce in his office of president of the Republic. “The magistrate and Cecilia left the palace at nightfall.
