The american FBI will help the investigators to lebanon to shed light on the tragedy which claimed the lives of 171 people.

The FBI will join the investigators lebanese and international to attempt to determine the causes of the explosion that rocked the Beirut port, said on Thursday the number three of the american diplomacy, David Hale, on a visit to the lebanese capital.

The under-secretary of State for political Affairs, made the announcement during a tour in the neighbourhood of Gemayzeh blown by the explosion which has left more than 171 people dead, where the French president Emmanuel Macron had already visited a week earlier.

“I’d like to announce that the FBI (american federal police) will soon join the investigators lebanese and international, at the invitation of the Lebanese, to help answer the questions that everyone asks about the circumstances that led to the explosion,” said the u.s. official.

Refusal of an international investigation

The lebanese authorities have announced an investigation on the explosion of August 4, caused by the presence of a huge stock of ammonium nitrate in the port of the capital, which has ravaged entire neighborhoods and killed more than 6 500 injured.

The president Michel Aoun has refused an international investigation. Due to the presence of the French victims, Paris has opened an investigation, and also provides logistical support to Lebanon with means of investigation, and has dispatched teams of police and research.

The american envoy, who is scheduled to meet on Friday the lebanese officials as well as representatives of civil society, said that his country supports the formation of a government “that responds to the will of his people and is truly committed to and acts for the reform”.
