On Wednesday March 20, the draw for the groups for the football event of the Olympic Games took place, at the Paris 2024 headquarters. For the men’s team led by Thierry Henry, the fate was rather favorable. They in fact avoided the South American teams and the main favorites before the quarter-finals. The Blues will face the United States, New Zealand and the winner of the play-off match between Guinea and an Asian team in the group stage. The France team will play its opening match against the United States on Wednesday July 24 in Marseille.
For the women’s team, however, adversity will be encountered from the start of the competition. Hervé Renard’s team inherits particularly difficult opponents from the group stage, with an entry into contention against Colombia, before facing the Canadian reigning Olympic champions and New Zealand. For coach Hervé Renard, it will be necessary to “be careful and concentrated”, while the tight format of the competition, with only 12 teams, pits favorite teams against each other from the first matches.
The U23 Asian Championship will determine which Asian teams qualify directly and which one will participate in the play-off against Guinea.
