The scientific Council responsible to advise the government on the Covid-19 judge “extremely likely” to increase the circulation of coronaviruses in the fall, and therefore recommends to maintain the health data collected during the epidemic. The lengthening of the duration of conservation of these data (which allow to detect and isolate contacts of persons ill) is provided for by the draft law on the end of the emergency, health, debated in the Senate from this Monday.

But this controversy : the College of physicians has already expressed its “deep concern” in the face of the hypothesis of a prolongation of this period, for reasons of confidentiality. “These data will be extremely valuable as long as the threat of a resumption of the circulation of the virus on French territory,” judge of the scientific Council, in an opinion made public Monday. According to him, “an intensification of the circulation of SARS-CoV-2 in the northern hemisphere at a future date more or less distant (a few months, and in particular to the approach of the winter) is extremely likely.”

“In this context, it seems to us essential to preserve the data for research purposes and epidemiological follow-up”, insists the scientific Council. They are, according to him, “a single source of information (…) in order to understand the dynamics of the spread of the virus, and to assess the impact of different control measures (its) traffic.”

The “conservation should be in the form of pseudonymisée and not just anonymous”, advocated by the Council. This will ensure “that the data of the same individual, non-identifying, can be connected to each other (ex: documentation of reinfection), or linked with data from other databases”.

“for comparison, the data of the notifiable diseases, which is part of the Covid-19, are typically stored in the form directly referential, for a period of 12 months, before being stored in the form pseudonymisée for durations of up to 25 years for the reporting of notifiable diseases under investigation, such as tuberculosis,” notes the Council.
