At least 16 officials of the port of the capital of Lebanon and of the customs authorities, have been detained in the framework of the investigation on the explosion deadly.

At least 16 officials from the Beirut port and customs authorities, have been detained in the framework of the investigation on the explosion of deadly and devastating Tuesday of a warehouse containing tons of ammonium nitrate, announced on Thursday that the military prosecutor.

It is “responsible to the board of directors of the port of Beirut and the customs administration, and responsible for the maintenance and (workers) had performed work in the hangar number 12”, in which were stored the tonnes of ammonium nitrate, stated that the military prosecutor Fadi Akiki in a press release.

“Sixteen people are being detained in the framework of the investigation,” said the statement, without specifying the date of their arrest, their identity or the charges against them. They were arrested Wednesday or Thursday, according to a source close to the folder.

The explosion in the port of Beirut on Tuesday has left more than 130 dead and 5000 injured, and devastated entire neighborhoods. It has its origin according to the authorities, the 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored for six years in a warehouse “without measures of precaution”, of the confession even of the lebanese Prime minister Hassan Diab.

“Those responsible for this disaster have to pay the price”

on Tuesday, Hassan Diab had denounced it a “disaster” after the explosions, the deadliest that have rocked the Beirut port, ensuring that officials should “give account”. “What happened today will not pass without accounts being rendered. The responsible of this disaster will pay the price”, had hammered the head of government during a televised speech.

The lebanese authorities gave four days to a “committee of inquiry” to establish the responsibilities in the explosions, had announced on Thursday morning the head of the diplomacy Charbel Wehbé on Europe 1. “Since this morning, a decision was made to create a committee of investigation, who has four days to give a detailed report on the responsibilities. How, who, what, where ? There will be judicial decisions, it is serious and we take it seriously”, had explained the lebanese minister of foreign Affairs. “The perpetrators of this horrible crime of negligence will be punished by a committee of judges,” he added.
