Scotland captain Andrew Robertson on Wednesday urged his teammates to put their feelings aside next week against Ukraine to pursue their dream of competing at the World Cup. Scotland face Ukraine on Wednesday June 1 in the World Cup play-off semi-final. The meeting was originally scheduled for March. It was postponed because of the Russian military invasion of Ukraine.
“We gave them all the time they needed. We helped them as much as we could but on Wednesday night we will have to be ready to fight for our dreams,” the Scottish defender told BBC Sport. This will be Ukraine’s first game since the start of the war.
Robertson, who is preparing with his club Liverpool for Saturday’s Champions League final against Real Madrid, admits he would have supported Ukraine himself in other circumstances. “Everyone probably wants Ukraine to win. If it was against any other country, I would probably want them to win, but unfortunately they are playing my country and we will have to stop them,” he said, as Scotland did not s has qualified for a World Cup since 1998.
The winner of the match will travel to Cardiff to face Wales on June 5 with a ticket to Qatar at stake (November 21-December 18).
