The limited series, based on Sally Rooney‘s bestselling debut by the same name, centers on Frances and her ex-girlfriend-turned-best friend Bobbi who become romantically entwined with an older, married couple in their 30s. Frances and Bobbi were still together three years ago, even though they split up. Melissa, an older and more confident writer, charms them both. The foursome meet Melissa’s handsome actor husband Nick through her and they begin an intense flirtation which will test both their relationships.
“You can have these different permutations within that quartet relationship and power dynamics and attraction,” director Lenny Abrahamson said to Vanity Fair in February 2022. All of it revolves around Frances.
2017’s novel uses text messages and email to show the changing dynamics between Frances and Nick. Rooney however teased that the adaptation Conversations with Friends would approach the matter from a different perspective. In a statement released in February 2020, the author stated that she was confident that they would find new and exciting ways to dramatize the novel’s dynamics. She also expressed excitement to see the process unfold.

The Plot
Conversations with Friends is set in Ireland in 2008. It follows Frances Oliver and her ex-girlfriend Bobbi ( Sasha Lane), who are two creative twenty-somethings who fall in love with an older married couple. Frances starts a relationship with Nick (Alwyn) as Bobbi (Kirke), and Melissa (Kirke). All four relationships are put to the test as the friends of Frances take sides in the relationship between the couples. Frances and Bobbi’s bond could end up being destroyed.
The Cast
Although Oliver, Alwyn, and Kirke all look very similar to their books counterparts, Bobbi was modified to include elements from Sasha Lane’s life as a Black American woman. The American Honey star said that she and Leny had many conversations about her origins, as well as how much she is talked about in the media. “We wanted Bobbi to be even more apart from the rest. She was more distinct by having an American accent.
Abrahamson said, “We saw brilliant individuals, but there was something about Sasha. Bobbi has a quality few people can match — this extraordinary quality, this impact.
The Teaser
Hulu launched the first trailer on February 20, 2022. It teased the complex relationships between the main characters. Bobbi speaks in a voice-over, saying that people can love and have meaningful relationships. The camera captures their passionate kisses and lingering looks. The teaser warns that it’s not just about friends.
The Author
Conversations with Friends was Rooney’s debut novel. Much of the story is influenced by her experiences as a Dublin-based creative in the 2000s. She said PBS Newshour that she believes it was right to refer to it as a “coming-of-age story”. “I think what I was trying was to observe the texture and world I was living in. Even though the stories of the characters are fictional, their exploits are figments. However, I found the world they live in very similar to my own world as I wrote the book.
