“We are thrilled to announce that Julian Fellowes, the entire Downton casting are back for #DowntonAbbey2,” the official Downton Twitter account stated in an April 2021 statement.
Downton Abbey traces the lives of the Crawleys and their family in the English countryside during the early 1900s. Fellowes, the original creator of the PBS series, will write the screenplay while Simon Curtis joins the team to direct. The sequel is in production right now and will be released March 18, 2022.
Maggie Smith, Imelda Staunton and Hugh Bonneville will all be reprising their roles. Hugh Dancy and Laura Haddock, Nathalie baye, Dominic West, and Hugh Dancy will also join the fun. However, it’s not known what their ranks may be in the household.
Bonneville, who plays Robert Crawley the patriarch, shared his excitement with a masked selfie in April 2021. Bonneville said, “Good to be back. #DowntonAbbey2” he wrote while holding two fingers in front of a poster.
Highclere Castle was the location of the filming for the fictional Downton Abbey. They also shared their excitement via twitter. “Great to have crew and cast back there,” the official account of the castle wrote.
Lady Crawley said that there is never a dull moment. Downton Abbey2 is in production, and it’s coming sooner than you think.

Fans began clamoring to see a movie after the finale of the original series, which ran from 2010 through 2015. In September 2019, the first Downton Abbey movie premiered. The film featured the Crawleys preparing to welcome King George V (the future grandparents of queen Elizabeth II) and Queen Mary (the most important visitors they had ever hosted at their ancestral house).
“When you walk back on set, it feels just like the first season. It’s like nothing’s changed,” Dockery said Harper’s Bazaar in 2019. We were all part in this huge family, and this phenomenon took us all by surprise. It’s still going on, and I have to pinch myself. There were many reasons to make the film. But it felt like people wouldn’t stop talking if we made a film. People meet each other on the streets and at work. It’s a constant question: “Is there any more?”
Dockery was correct about the audience. The first movie grossed more than $237,000,000 at the box office, and it earned two nominations for the 2020 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.
Some cast members were concerned that it would prove difficult to recreate the magic of six seasons of near perfect television. “I was relieved that it wasn’t me who had to write it,” Elizabeth McGovern (Cora Crawley), told CBS News. “Because I felt a lot pressure. I meant, I was thinking, “Is this such an idea?” Because people have so much affection to those characters and that series. It’s also a risk.
Meet Myrna
This photo is from Downton Abbey: The New Era. It gives fans their first glimpse at Myrna Dalgleish, (Haddock), and Andy (Michael Fox).
When will it be released?
Downton Abbey – A New Era will be in theaters March 18, 2022. Production started in April 2021. McGovern informed her Instagram followers three months later that she had completed filming all her scenes.
What is it all about?
The August 2021 teaser clip shows Downton staff preparing for their family’s trip to Europe. Mr. Carson ( Jim Carter ) jokes that “The British are coming.” Although it is not known who will be marrying the bride, the footage suggests a wedding. One possibility is Tom Branson ( Allen Leech), a man who began a relationship with Lucy Smith ( Tuppence Midton).
Surprise, Surprise!
Nicol, who plays Mrs. Patmore in the film, teased a few surprises while discussing it in March 2022. She said Entertainment Tonight, “It’s absolutely jam packed full of stuff.” There’s so much happening. It’s hilarious. It was very funny. Because there is romance and other things you might not expect, there was a lot that made me weep. It’s something I love. Although I know what will happen, there will be things that I can’t foresee.
She said that Mrs. Patmore would be a great role in a film. She explained that she could only take baby steps and do it one at a while. “I’m pretty certain I’m not speaking out-of-turn if I say that the cast would love to have a third member.”
