Ordered, at the peak of the health crisis, the price of disposable masks have exploded in recent months. According to the JDD, they should decline to the start of the year.
They will accompany now the French in their daily lives. Imposed since July 20 in all enclosed public places, masks are mandatory in the outdoors in many cities of France. This is particularly the case in Paris in some areas of high usage. But this phenomenon is combined with a sharp rise in the price of health equipment.

According to the JDD, the price of surgical masks and disposable has been increased up to 19 since the beginning of the health crisis. It is, thus, increased to approximately 0.05 euro before the pandemic Covid-19 at a maximum price of € 0.95 TTC today (the price is capped by government decree), ensures the journal. What a burden to the budget of many families, for whom the purchase of masks can become a real expense item.

Supply and demand
This inflation made sense at the height of the crisis, in march-April. “The increase in the prices had been boosted by two factors, sliding JDD a government expert. On the one hand, global demand has rocketed during the crisis and, on the other, the main raw material has become rare, therefore expensive. It is a meltblown, a veil of non-woven polypropylene, which filter the particles. In addition, the cost of air freight, higher than in maritime transport, contributed to this explosion of prices.

The situation is however different today. The market for the production of masks has become very competitive, the shipping has resumed and the masks are cheaper to manufacture. They “come out now plants to 0.07 euro in China and even 0.04 euro in India,” according to the JDD, which ensures that orders will “not come”. “All the world was at the height of the crisis, reserves, crowded, that it is necessary to pass today,” said one trader of the company NewTrends Asia Pacific.
‘t selling at a loss
In France, the sale at a loss is prohibited, the stocks bought dear at the height of the crisis, therefore, cannot be sold today at prices that are too low. It will have to wait the flow of these stocks – in supermarkets and pharmacies – to observe a price decrease. The measures to make the mask mandatory, should expedite this process.
The multiplication of the production of masks and the return of the deliveries by boat will contribute to a lower price. This last is expected in September. “You don’t need to bring boxes of Kleenex in the first class, tells the JDD a buyer of a large French company. The aircraft has accounted for between a third and half the price of a mask.”.
