Holidaying in a campervan or motorhome is the perfect way to get outdoors, see the countryside and make new friends on campsites and touring sites around the country. Being the perfect motorhome camping neighbour on these sites is simply a matter of common sense. When you are considerate of other people, you’ll have a better time and everyone will have a more enjoyable stay.

Here’s what to do to make friends and enjoy your motorhome holiday.

Arriving at the Campsite

Arrive when you say you’re going to, paying attention to the check in times. If you’re going to be late, call the campsite to let them know. Drive carefully on the site as there will normally be strict speed limits. There will probably be plenty of adults and children walking or cycling on and around the campground. Try not to keep your engine on for longer than necessary when you’rechecking out the pitch.

Staying on the Site

Respect the environment and the people around you, making sure you take care not to disturb others’ privacy. One of the biggest problems on campsites comes from unwanted noise. There are often rules that ask for quiet after a certain time at night, but you should generally aim for minimum noise throughout the day as well. If you have kids that love to make a racket, or dogs that can’t resist barking, find sites that are happy to accept families and have a livelier atmosphere. Be friendly, although that doesn’t mean you have to invite yourself around to someone else’s campervan or have an in depth conversation at the washroom. But a friendly smile makes all the difference.

Waste and Campfires

Check with the campsite whether you can have a campfire or a fire pit. Many sites will allow this, and it makes evenings on the site special and helps to warm you up! You may be able to have a barbeque on a special place in the site if fires are not allowed near to the tents and vans. Don’t leave a fire unattended and make sure you extinguish it before you go to bed. Don’t put any ashes or embers in the rubbish bins.

Make sure you put your wastewater in the right place and all your toilet waste in the correct disposal point. It is a great idea to tidy up your pitch as much as you can when you leave, so there is little trace that you were ever camping there.

Pets and Kids

Pets and children are welcome at many campsites. Keep your pets under control and always on a lead. Children should also be monitored as much as possible – if kids run wild, let them do so in the play areas or on the beach! A campervan is ideal for a young family, and there are so many ways to enjoy yourself. Keep other people in mind with noise levels, particularly at night.
