Growing up, Britney and her mum, Lynne Spears, were as thick as thieves, together with the matriarch taking her eldest girl to out-of-state auditions and performances within their native Louisiana while Jamie bounced from job to job and struggled with alcoholism. Lynne considered leaving her husband several times after their July 1975 wedding (and even filed for divorce in December 1979 before withdrawing her request ), but breaking up their family was the last thing she wished to perform.
“When I look back, I guess I might have ended it a lot sooner and possibly saved my son [Bryan] some heartache. But I wouldn’t have my women, Britney and Jamie Lynn,” the former schoolteacher wrote in her 2008 memoir,” Through the Storm. “Plus, it is nearly impossible to state I should have done this or that. At the moment, divorcing Jamie didn’t look like the right thing to do.”
Following Britney’s career took off in 1998, however, her parents’ marriage took a turn for the worse. They divorced in May 2002, along with the Grammy winner after called it”the best thing that has ever happened to my loved ones.”
Jamie stayed in Britney’s life after his separation from Lynne and has been tasked with playing a critical role commencing in February 2008, when a Los Angeles court gave him command of his famous daughter’s personal affairs and estate amid her much-publicized breakdown. Though he originally petitioned for its conservatorship to be momentary, it was made permanent that October. The legal arrangement was set up since, despite Britney eventually making an expert comeback, releasing new albums, touring the world, estimating a year of The X Factor and raking in almost $140 million throughout a four-year vegas residency.
Since Britney’s longest-serving conservator — many others, such as lawyer Andrew Wallet and licensed fiduciary Jodi Montgomery, have gone and come over time Jamie was credited with basically saving Britney’s life when she was at her lowest point.
“This is a story of a close family but not an ideal one,” Jamie’s attorney Leon Gladstone stated in court in October 2012. It’s a story of a father who has had to step up and take action he never thought he would have to take.”
And yet, the Crossroads celebrity and many people in her inner circle feel that ending the conservatorship is long overdue.
“Britney’s family is at war with each other and it is all due to the conservatorship,” a source only told Us Weekly at September 2020, noting that Lynne, who briefly reconciled with Jamie in late 2010 but never remarried him”wants a care plan established that would transition Britney’s personal life from the conservatorship.”

Jamie’s Alcoholism
Lynne composed in Through the Storm which Jamie”always appreciated a beer here and there, but he did not start drinking heavily until afterwards Bryan was born” in April 1977. “With every alcohol-soaked episode, our perfect little life started to unstitch, along with the knot we’d tied together with our vows and our love began to work loose, thread by debilitating thread,” she continued. Jamie eventually went to rehabilitation in 2004 after Britney urged him to seek assist.
Jamie’s Absence
Britney’s representative at the time, Nancy Carson, recalled visiting Jamie around much less, stating in the”Framing Britney Spears” incident of The New York Times Gifts in February 2021,”Jamie visited from time to time and was anxious to see this time be worthwhile so he might justify the money that it was breaking to do this” Former Jive executive Kim Kaiman, meanwhile, stated in the documentary,”Her mum would do anything it took, personally and for the family’s sake, for Britney to be a celebrity. I never spoke to her dad. The only matter Jamie ever said to me was,’My daughter will be so rich she is going to get me a ship. ”’
Jamie was Britney’s side throughout her 2008 MTV documentary, Britney: For the Record, as she prepared for her comeback following months of private setbacks. In a particularly memorable scene, the patriarch whipped up his daughter’s favourite comfort food, telling the camera,”Grits is a classic Southern tradition. She has been eating them since she was born. … Everybody else has Wheaties, however, South girls’ breakfast of champions is cheese grits.”
Jamie’s Protection
In the summer of 2014, the former gym owner purchased a video of Britney’s then-boyfriend, David Lucado, kissing and dancing with another woman so it wouldn’t escape on the internet and embarrass his daughter. Britney awakened with Lucado soon after.
Jamie’s Service
Jamie attended several of the pop star’s concerts throughout her Las Vegas residency, Britney: part of Me, which ran from December 2013 to December 2017.
Britney’s Support
The former Mouseketeer canceled her planned moment Vegas residency, Britney: Domination, in January 2019 after her daddy was hospitalized for a ruptured colon. “We are all so grateful that he came out of it alive, but he has a long road ahead of him. I needed to make the difficult decision to put my full focus and energy in my family at this time. I hope you all can understand,” she composed via Instagram at the moment.
Multiple sources exclusively told Us in September 2019 that police responded to Jamie’s California condominium the month ahead after he got in a debate with his grandson Sean Preston and”shook” the then-13-year-old. Britney’s ex-husband Kevin Federline subsequently acquired a restraining order from Jamie that prohibited his former father-in-law from arriving close Preston or the former couple’s eldest son, Jayden. While the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office declined to document child abuse charges against Jamie, the episode drove a wedge between Britney and her daddy and led Federline to alter his ex-wife’s custodial time. “The episode with Jamie and Preston changed everything,” a supply exclusively told Us in December 2020.
Britney and Jamie’s Court Fight
Throughout her time out of the spotlight, Britney became involved in her conservatorship. Back in August 2020, she filed court documents saying that she was “strongly opposed” to Jamie function as conservator of her individual and of her estate. She asked that Montgomery, who temporarily replaced Jamie after his November 2019 health scare, permanently oversee Britney’s personal affairs. She also asked that a”qualified corporate aide” take charge of her money. Regardless of his daughter’s requests, Jamie has continued to fight to remain on the case.
