“Jagged Little Pill”, a musical based upon Morissette’s 1995 album, will be permanently closed on Broadway following the COVID-19 shutdown. The show was announced late Monday.

We are proud of this show and the extraordinary company that, despite being in very difficult times, has told the story of ‘Jagged Little Pill’ every night. Producers Vivek J.Tiwary, ArvindEthan David, and Eva Price released a joint statement describing the show’s healing, human connection and catharsis.

“But, the dramatic turn of events with the rapid spread and spread of the Omicron variant has changed everything. “We are shocked by the emergence of another major public health crisis. We must prioritize safety and health for the entire cast and crew of ‘Jagged Little Pill’.

All tickets purchased for performances are refunded.

The musical ‘Jagged Pill’ brought Alanis Morissette’s iconic album to the forefront.

Celia Rose Gooding and Derek Klena starred in the show. It was nominated and won 15 Tony Awards, two Grammy Awards, and Elizabeth Stanley and Sean Allan Krill were among those who received them. The production featured songs such as “Ironic,” “Hand in my Pocket” and “You Oughta Know.”

“Jagged Little Pill” was a song by Glen Ballard and Morissette, with lyrics by Morissette, music by Diablo Cody and music by Glen Ballard. It told the story about the Healys, a suburban family of upper-middle class residents in Connecticut who faced the daily realities of racism and sexuality.

The musical was a hit with critics and fans. However, there was controversy over Broadway’s decision to make Jo a cisgender character and Nora Schell’s allegations that the stage manager for the show ignored the fact that they needed surgery to treat Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

Gooding, who starred in the role of Frankie’s daughter, and Antonio Cipriano who played Frankie’s love interest both quit the production in September. They blamed the treatment of transgender and nonbinary actors.

Gooding stated in a long statement that “I cannot ignore how ‘Jagged” has affected the trans and nonbinary communities, cast members on and off stage as well as behind the scenes of the production making process.” It will be in my best interest to concentrate more on work with which I can emotionally and morally align myself, as Frankie did.

More than one-third (or more) of Broadway shows have had to cancel performances this week due to COVID-19 breakthrough cases among cast members and crew. “Dear Evan Hansen”, “Hamilton,” Aladin” and “MJ,” have all canceled shows at least through Christmas. But “Jagged Little Pill”, the first to do so permanently, is “Dear Evan Hansen”.
