An American study suggests that certain perfumes could protect you from mosquito bites.

Every summer, this subject comes up time and time again: mosquitoes. A colleague claims that this sprayer is revolutionary: “The label even claims 99% proven effectiveness!” A friend praises the famous lemongrass as an effective and more ecological solution. There are also incense sticks, scented candles, platelets, etc… But strangely, nothing helps, the bites are still there.

What is certain is that we are not equal in the face of mosquitoes. But why ? Studies suggest that the composition of the skin would influence, others underline the role of the body odor or the blood group which would favor the preference of mosquitoes.

Recently, scientists at Virginia Tech tested several scented soaps to find out if mosquitoes had a preference. Clément Vinauger, co-principal investigator of this study, presents the results: “Just by changing the soap scents, someone who already attracts mosquitoes at a higher than average rate could further amplify or diminish that attraction.”

Unfortunately, solutions to mosquitoes are often misleading or release toxic substances. There are also mosquito traps, but that comes at a cost: over 1,300 euros for this French machine!

Virginia Tech’s work offers a far less expensive alternative: the use of coconut-scented soaps. “Certain fatty acids, such as those found in coconut oil derivatives, may serve as repellents for mosquitoes and other insects,” the summary of their investigation states.

Eucalyptol, a natural compound present in the essential oil of certain eucalyptus trees, is said to be as effective as coconut. Conversely, the study recommends avoiding soaps “with floral scents and warm and sweet fragrances”. Avoid choosing “lily, jasmine, lilac, mimosa, vanilla, mango, musk, amber, sandalwood and certain citrus fruits”, according to Sciencepost.

The study uses the conditional because it involves only a sample of volunteers and requires additional research to confirm their result with certainty.
