The provisional results of the presidential election give his political opponent, Lazarus Chakwera, winner.
The outgoing president of Malawi, Peter Mutharika, has denounced irregularities during the presidential election played out Tuesday after cancellation for fraud of his re-election in 2019, while the provisional results giving his rival Lazarus Chakwera winner.
“We had hoped an election without irregularities (…) all Malawians have seen that this election was the worst part of the story,” said Mutharika in front of the press. “More broadly, we believe that most of the results sent to the MEC (electoral Commission) are not the reflection of the will of the people”, he added, without, however, formally request a new ballot.
The GUY has so far published the results of more than 80% of the 5002 polling stations in the country, who give to Lazarus Chakwera an advance of nearly a million votes over Peter Mutharika. His next point release is planned in the evening.

Cancellation of the first results
Before the declaration of Peter Mutharika, his democratic progressive Party (DPP) demanded the annulment of the results due to “incidents which could affect the legality and credibility” of the poll.
One of its leaders, Francis Mphepo, had complained of the exclusion of the tellers of his party, and he estimated more than a million and a half of the number of votes lost by the outgoing because of “violence or intimidation”.
At the polling place in may 2019, the GUY had proclaimed the victory of Peter Mutharika, in power since 2014, with 38,57% of the vote against 35,41% to Lazarus Chakwera. But seizure by the opposition, the constitutional Court invalidated last February for the results because of “irregularities widespread and systematic”, and ordered a new election.
Malawi is the second country in sub-saharan Africa to have annulled a presidential election, after Kenya in 2017.
