This is the first in the arab world. The united arab Emirates announced Saturday the entry into service of their civil nuclear power plant in Barakah.
“We are announcing today that the united arab Emirates, have made, successfully, to the commissioning of the first reactor of the plant in Barakah, the first in the arab world”, tweeted sheikh Mohammed ben Rached al-Maktoum, Prime minister of the Uae and ruler of Dubai.
“This is a historic moment for Emirates in their objective to provide a new form of clean energy to the nation,” said for his part, Hamad Alkaabi, the representative of the Uae to the international energy Agency atomic (IAEA). The authorities in uae had given in February the green light to the operation of the nuclear power plant located in the north-west of the country, without giving a date for its commissioning.

Four reactors
Founded in 2016, Nawah Energy Company shall operate and maintain the four reactors which must be installed there, according to the website of the company.
The construction is carried out by a consortium led by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and by the south Korean Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), for a cost estimated at 24.4 billion dollars.
The first of four reactors had to be put into service by the end of 2017 but the start date has been postponed several times to meet, according to the officials, the legal conditions of security. When they become fully operational, the four reactors will have the capacity to produce 5600 megawatts of electricity, or about 25% of the needs of the united arab Emirates, oil-rich country.
