He wanted to die as a martyr under police bullets when he committed an attack during the 2024 Olympic Games. A 16-year-old young man was arrested on Tuesday in Haute-Savoie.

File S for radicalization towards Islamism, a 16-year-old teenager was arrested this Tuesday, April 23, 2024 in Marignier, in Haute-Savoie, at his parents’ home, reveal several media including Le Journal le Dimanche and Le Parisien. During the search, various handwritten documents as well as his mobile phone were seized. Among the documents, BFMTV relays, was notably a declaration of allegiance to the Islamic State.

A message posted by this young man of French nationality on the encrypted messaging service Telegram had initially put investigators on his trail. He announced that he was seeking to “obtain the elements necessary to make an explosive belt”, according to a JDD police source, but also wanted to “die as a martyr in the name of the Islamic caliphate”. An investigation, now in the hands of the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (Pnat), has been opened for “participation in a terrorist criminal association with a view to preparing crimes of attacks against people”, indicates Le Parisien.

Placed in custody by police officers from the General Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI), the teenager admitted wanting to commit a “suicidal terrorist action” in the La Défense business district, in the Paris suburbs, during the period of Paris Olympic Games. The young man wanted to intervene armed with a rifle and an explosive belt, and die under the bullets of the police who came to arrest him. His custody continues. Its aim is to determine “the reality of the planned terrorist act and, if applicable, its state of completion,” Le Pnat told Le Parisien, who nevertheless calls for “caution.”
