A great day for the Habs. After more than 2h34 of play, the Frenchman Gilles Simon eliminated the American player Steve Johnson in three sets on the Philippe-Chatrier court (7-5, 6-1, 7-6). Earlier in the day, Hugo Gaston qualified in three sets against Argentinian Cachin. Not a big adversity today but the Frenchman did the job to validate his ticket.
The surprise of the day comes to us from the women’s table. Frenchwoman Léolia Jeanjean has won the second Grand Slam match of her career and is heading to the third round of Roland-Garros. She defeated the Czech Karolina Pliskova (seed number 8) in two sets (6-2, 6-2)
In the night session, Alizé Cornet took out the 2017 winner, Jelena Ostapenko in three sets and in 01h41 of play (6-0, 1-6, 6-3). Well pushed by the atmosphere of Philippe-Chatrier, the French will face in the 3rd round the American Sloane Stephens.
On the men’s draw, Daniil Medvedev, 2nd player in the world, qualified for the next round by defeating Serbian player Laslo Djere in three sets (6-3, 6-4, 6-3). Same observation for Casper Ruud, 8th in the ATP ranking, easily victorious over Finnish player Emil Ruusuvuori in three sets and two hours of play (6-3, 6-4, 6-2).
It also goes for Stéfanos Tsitsipas against the young Czech Zdenek Kolar but not without fighting hard (3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 6-7). The last set was played on a long tiebreak won by the Greek 9-7.
Andrey Rublev (seed n°7) rebounded well to win in control against the Argentinian player Federico Delbonis (6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3).
Despite a first set loss, the Italian Jannik Sinner (11th) reacted accordingly to win the next three sets against the Spanish player Roberto Carballés Baena (6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 3-6) .
On the women’s side, the first player in the world Iga Swiatek qualified without worry against Alison Riske (6-0, 6-2). Well imitated by Aryna Sabalenka, victorious against Madison Brengle (6-1, 6-3).
It was nevertheless more complicated for Paula Badosa, 3rd in the world, against the Slovenian Kaja Juvan. The Spaniard nevertheless reacted well after a complicated start (7-5, 3-6, 6-2)
The French Carolina Garcia failed to imitate her compatriots Léolia Jeanjean and Alizé Cornet. She is eliminated in the 2nd round after her defeat against Madison Keys in two sets (6-4, 7-6).
Disappointment also for Simona Halep, victorious at Roland-Garros in 2018 who saw her career come to an end following her loss against the young Chinese Zheng Qinwen in three sets (6-2, 2-6, 1-6).
