A 14-year-old boy was arrested on Wednesday May 3 after he appeared to have shot nine people, including eight children, at a school in Belgrade. All are dead.
[Updated May 3, 2023 at 12:50 p.m.] It is a drama whose circumstances have yet to be clarified, but which are beyond comprehension. This Wednesday, May 3, around 8:40 a.m., a teenager allegedly opened fire in a school in Belgrade, causing numerous victims. “Eight children and a security guard were killed in the shooting that occurred this morning at ‘Vladislav Ribnikar’ elementary school in Vracar, while six children and a school teacher were injured and are currently taken care of at the emergency center and in Tirsova,” the Serbian Interior Ministry said in a statement posted on social media.
Six students and a teacher were also injured, the Serbian television channel N1, which said that one of the students is in critical condition. The guard was killed when he intervened to stop the young shooter. “The tragedy would probably have been worse if this man hadn’t stood in front of the boy who was shooting,” Vracar municipality president Milan Nedeljkovic told Serbian media.
If the identity of the killer – and the premeditation of the murder – seem to be confirmed for the investigators, the Serbian government is still measured in the presentation of the facts: “The police dispatched all available patrols to the spot and arrested a minor on the spot […] suspected of having fired several shots in the direction of students and a school guard with a pistol belonging to his father”.
