The Oilers, winners of their series against the Flames (4-1), qualified for the Western Conference final of the NHL play-offs on Thursday, Carolina taking an option for the Eastern Conference against New York (3- 2). Edmonton won in Calgary (5-4) after extra time, after being led 2-0, then 4-3. Connor McDavid scored the liberating goal in the “overtime”.

This is the first time since 2006 that Edmonton has returned to this stage of the competition. Team Canada will face either the Colorado Avalanche or the St. Louis Blues. The Hurricanes have taken a step towards a confrontation with the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay. But they will have to win Saturday at Rangers or again at home on Monday, in the event of a decisive seventh match.
