The case dates back to the night of Saturday July 1 to Sunday July 2, 2023. That evening, a man was discovered dead on the Lieutaud course, not far from the historic center of Marseille. According to the autopsy carried out, the individual died as a result of a “violent shock to the chest”, caused by a projectile type flashball or LBD, said the prosecution.

The first elements of the file indicate that the victim was a priori traveling on a scooter and that police forces had been deployed in the area because of the riots and looting that occurred that night. But at this stage, “it [is not] possible to determine if the victim had participated or even if he had been able to circulate in such an area,” said the prosecution.
In addition, the precise location where the man was hit by the flashball has not yet been determined. But it seems to have happened not far from where his body was discovered since “the impact had caused cardiac arrest, and therefore death in the near future.”
