Singaporean businessman of Indian origin Anil Murthy has been removed from his position as president of Valencia CF by the club’s board of directors, the Valencian side announced in a statement on Monday.
“The Board of Directors considers that a change of leader is needed to regain credibility among the supporters in order to put Valence CF back on the road to success. This is why Anil Murthy ceases to be the president and employee of Valencia CF with immediate effect, ”announced the club in its press release.
In the same statement, the Valencian club announced the appointment of Sean Bai, previously director of the Academy of Valencia CF, as interim general manager. While waiting for a new president, he will be responsible for managing the day-to-day affairs of the club on the sporting level, under the control of the board of directors.
During the month of April, several recordings made public by the Valencian sports newspaper Superdeporte showed that Murthy made very critical remarks towards the Spanish federation, his own players, supporters and former managers.
“The board wishes to ensure that the content of conversations between Anil Murthy and third parties which have leaked to the press only reflect the personal opinion of Anil Murthy and not that of Valencia CF. Valencia CF disassociates itself from these opinions,” the club said in its press release on Monday.
On May 21, more than ten thousand supporters gathered outside the stadium during their team’s match against Celta Vigo (2-0) on the 38th and final day of the league, to protest against the management of the club’s major shareholder Peter Lim and chairman Anil Murthy. Already last December, more than 15,000 people expressed their dissatisfaction.
