After a 17th stage settled in a sprint, place at the end of this Tour of Italy with three dantesque stages.
The return of the mountains and even of the very high mountains this Thursday, May 25. 161 kilometers long, the 18th stage of the Giro starts from Oderzo towards Val di Zoldo with more than 3,700 meters of elevation gain. In detail, at kilometer 40.8 the runners will climb the summit of the Passo della Crosetta (11.6km at 7.1%) located at 1,118 meters above sea level. At kilometer 68.3 will rise the Pieve d’Alpago (3.4 km at 5.5%). And after a slight rising false flat, the final bouquet of this stage will present itself in front of the riders, with, at kilometer 135.2, the climb of Forcella Cibiana (9.6km at 7.8%) then in quick succession the Col de Coi (5.8km at 9.7%) followed by the climb to Val di Zoldo (2.3km at 7%).
Despite the profile, not sure to see the favorites playing for the stage victory. The opportunity is rather good for the breakaways to play for the final victory, it may even be the last chance of this Giro for the fighters. By losing time on Tuesday, Frenchman Thibaut Pinot could try to slip into the breakaway and play for victory. Warren Barguil or the Paret-Peintre brothers could also play spoilsport.
The dates of the Giro are traditionally fixed in May, which makes the race an essential prerequisite for the Tour de France, in the same way as the Tour of Spain or a handful of classics. The Giro d’Italia 2023 has thus been scheduled from May 6 for a duration of 3 weeks and will therefore end on Sunday May 28, 2023.
