The G7 states promised on Friday to end foreign financing of fossil fuel projects without carbon capture technology by “the end of 2022”, thanks to a reversal of Japan, the last country in the group which refused to engage.

“We are committed to ending, by the end of 2022, all new international direct public aid to the fossil energy sector without carbon capture technology,” they said in a joint statement to the outcome of a meeting of climate and energy ministers in Berlin.

The G7 countries have also committed to decarbonizing the majority of their electricity sector “by 2035” to fight against global warming, in particular via “the global exit from coal”, according to a joint declaration.
