A heavy toll. During the night from Saturday to Sunday, around 3 a.m., firefighters were alerted after a fire started in a five-storey building, located on one of the main squares in the historic center of Grasse (Alpes-Maritimes). The disaster quickly spread throughout the building. Several testimonies report that people were calling for help from the windows of the building in which the fire broke out last night. When they arrived, the emergency services noticed that the fire, particularly violent, was spreading in the stairwell.
Fifty firefighters and seventeen vehicles were mobilized. By 6 a.m. the fire was out. Despite the rapid response of firefighters, the blaze left at least three people dead. One of the victims jumped from one of the top floors to escape the flames and smoke, reports Nice-Matin. A seriously burned person was evacuated by helicopter to Toulon. Two other people are in serious condition. Fifteen other people were injured and were transported to hospitals in Grasse and Nice Pasteur. A psychological unit has been set up.
“It’s horrible, a real tragedy”, told Nice-Matin the mayor (LR) of Grasse, Jérôme Viaud. “The investigation will shed light on the causes of the fire. There were no structural problems in this building. On June 14, the building had voted to requalify the entire facade and common areas. , accompanied by the municipality,” he added. The origin of the fire remains to be determined. Seized, the judicial police went to the building to make the first findings. The Grasse prosecutor’s office has announced the opening of an investigation to determine the origin and circumstances of the incident. The relocation of about twenty people will be necessary, said the firefighters.
