U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai announced on Wednesday the launch of a lawsuit against Canada under their trade deal, over an ongoing dispute over dairy products. The US has formally requested ‘consultations’ under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) dispute settlement, saying ‘Canada’s restrictions’ on US products are ‘contrary’ to its commitment made under this treaty.

Ottawa continues “to prevent American workers, producers, farmers and exporters from fully benefiting from the market access Canada has committed to under the USMCA,” Katherine Tai said in a statement.

“Canada has fulfilled its obligations under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) to ensure that our supply management system is compliant,” minister Mary Ng told AFP. Commerce, after the announcement of the launch of the procedure against Ottawa by Washington.
