The Dutch railway has announced to pay the Survivors of the persecution of Jews and their relatives compensation for the Transport to the Westerbork transit camp. The details should develop a proposal for a Commission, the company said. How many people can get compensation, is still unclear.
In the Nazi camp in the North-East of the country, tens of thousands of Jews were interned, and then in the concentration and extermination camps in other countries. The Dutch railway had provided the costs for the Transport of 102,000 Jews to Westerbork, in the case of the German occupiers in the account and Deneme Bonusu several million guilders. The bill had been paid from the confiscated Jewish property.
The train had apologized in 2005 for her role in the Nazi period in the Jewish community. The company donated money for memorial projects. Compensation to individuals have not yet been paid. In the current communication, it is said that it was a “dark Chapter in the history of our country and our company”.
The Amsterdam Salo Muller, whose parents had been deported to Westerbork and from there to Auschwitz, had threatened the railroad with a lawsuit. Company boss Roger van Boxtel upheld the claim now. Muller told the Dutch television, he was very grateful. It means a lot to him that the railway does not understand, “that the Suffering is over”.
