This extraordinary action film is finally entitled to a new episode, almost ten years after its cinema release. This is the event not to be missed on the big screen.
The wait has been very long for fans of action cinema. One of the pillars of the genre was a true visual revolution when it was released in theaters nine years ago. Announced for many years, the new opus is finally released on the big screen and promises to create an event for lovers of the seventh art. This is the release of the moment not to be missed.
In 2015, Mad Max: Fury Road was a masterful slap in the face, a very successful sequel to the franchise created by George Miller in 1979. The Australian filmmaker revisited his own work by offering the viewer a two-hour chase, which changes the codes of classic blockbusters, with an assumed aesthetic and a resolutely feminist message. The film won support from the press (with a rating of 4.4/5 on Allociné) and the public (4.2/5) and success at the box office, grossing $380.4 million across the world.
This is why George Miller then began to work on a new episode, which is not so much a sequel as a prequel. In Furiosa, spectators will discover the past of the shaved-headed heroine played by Charlize Theron before her meeting with “Max” played by Tom Hardy in Fury Road.
In detail, this prequel tells how the young protagonist finds herself, in her childhood, kidnapped by the biker horde of the warlord, Dementus. The latter wages a merciless battle with Immortan Joe to take control of the Wasteland. In the midst of this war, Furiosa must find a way home. Since the film takes place in the past, the original cast is not returning. It’s Anya Taylor-Joy (The Lady’s Game) who lends her features to the title role, opposite Chris Hemsworth (Marvel’s Thor, here excellent as the big bad) and Tom Burke.
We saw the film in preview at the Cannes Film Festival, and we can assure you: Furiosa takes up all the codes of Mad Max: Fury Road: a woman struggling with tyrants, who must fight for her emancipation and his survival, all served by chases and battles in the desert. If the film suffers from length in its beginnings, it is as enjoyable as the previous opus and remains a real cinematic pleasure. If the press was already able to form its opinion during its official preview at the Cannes Film Festival on May 15, the film will be released in cinemas in France on May 22, 2024.
