The world health Organization launched Thursday a call for urgent funding of the international framework created to speed up the access to the tools to fight against the Covid-19, the Accelerator ACT, designed to ensure that all countries equitable access to tests, treatments and vaccines.
“We believe that the world will have to spend at least $ 100 billion for new tools, in particular for all new vaccines being developed. The first need and the most immediate is $ 31.3 billion for the Accelerator ACT,” said the director of the organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, during a press conference in line, emphasizing that this was very little compared to the cost of the pandemic.

Launched at the end of April last by the WHO, the French president Emmanuel Macron, the president of the european Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, the Accelerator ACT brings together governments, organizations of the health sector, scientists, businesses, the civil society and philanthropists “who have joined forces to end more quickly with the pandemic”, according to the WHO.
Two months later, at the end of June, only $ 3.4 billion had been promised, the products of diagnosis, treatments, and vaccines.
“The best economic stimulus”
One of the pillars of the device is the Covax, a financing instrument launched by Gavi, the Alliance of the vaccine, to “encourage manufacturers to produce sufficient quantities of vaccine against the Covid-19, and ensure their availability to developing countries,” explained Gavi.
