A list of persons accused of having organized and carried out the repressions will be established and it will be submitted for approval to member States.

The european Union gave on Friday the green light to sanction the repression in Belarus following the disputed re-election of president Alexander Lukashenko, and sought appeasement with Turkey.

“The EU will now launch a process of sanctions against those responsible for the violence, arrests and fraud related to the election,” announced the minister of foreign Affairs, Sweden Ann Linde at the end of a video conference with his counterparts. “Everyone has agreed to initiate the procedure for further sanctions”, said the head of the diplomacy of Luxembourg, Jean Asselborn.

France is “fully committed to the principle of targeted individual sanctions and support for the rights and freedoms of the belarusian people”, confirmed the secretary of State for european Business Henrik jensen in a message on his Twitter account.

Solidarity with Greece

Belarus is still under the blow of an embargo on sales of arms and equipment that could be used for repression. Four persons are already prohibited to stay in the EU and their assets have been frozen since 2016. The new names will be added to this list.

The EU wants to force president Lukashenko to agree to a mediation plan in the three points proposed by the Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, to neighboring Belarus. Minsk has said that he is ready for a “constructive dialogue” and has begun to release hundreds of people arrested since Monday. All the testimonies point to the extreme brutality of the repression carried out by the special forces of the regime.

The opposition belarusian Svetlana Tikhanovskaïa, was a refugee in Lithuania, after having challenged the victory of Alexander Lukashenko, called on Friday to “peaceful demonstrations” in her country during the weekend.
