This NBC series follows “heroine”, Nicole Remy, as she tries to find love and romance with 16 suitors. The problem is that she and the men must adhere to the social rules of early 19th-century . This means they have to address each other as “Ms.” or “Mr.” and seldom interact apart.

“I had my heart broken. “The guy I fell in love, he didn’t love me back,” Ms. Remy (26), explained during Sunday’s premiere, March 6. “And that’s why this whole experiment is important to me. Modern dating does not work for me. These days, courtship is not possible. It’s more like “I’m picking up you on a dating app” and it’s not the kind of romance you want.

The Courtship creators made sure that Ms. Remy had help from her family and friends while choosing a partner. Instead of going to cocktail parties, Remy and her suitors attend balls where they dance and whisper into each others’ ears, while the rest of cast watches.

The software engineer said, “I’m ready for love and to find love like they did with Jane Austen novels.” Everything was more important back then because it took time.

Although the Regency was a brief period in British history, it inspired a lot of pop culture . This includes the novels that Bridgerton is built upon. The name of the era refers to King George III’s regency, who was declared unfit to lead in 1811. George IV, his son, ruled as prince regent in his place until he became King in 1820. While George III was only briefly featured in season 1 Bridgerton his son George IV ruled as the prince regent until he became king himself in 1820. However, his wife, Queen Charlotte ( Golda Rosheuvel ), was a key player.

The Courtship‘s narrator Rick Edwards – also known as Mr. Edwards to contestants — sometimes explains Regency customs to Ms. Remy to get rid of suitors. The former NFL cheerleader writes the names of six men on her dance card and gives them one more chance to show their skills in the ballroom. Although it isn’t exactly how dance cards were used in Regency times, it’s still close enough and much easier than using a dating app.

The Courtship airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on NBC. ET. The next day, episodes will be available for streaming on Peacock. Continue scrolling to find out what The Courship has to say about Regency England.

Right: The Surnames

The Courtship Suitors are pointedly referred by their last names. Mr. Saffa, Captain Kim and not Peter and Danny. This is also true for Ms. Remy’s parents, known as Mr. and Mrs. Remy, and her sister, “Mrs. Baker.” This is historical accuracy, since suitors wouldn’t dare to call Nicole by her first names if they didn’t know her well. Even so, they’d still use “Ms. Remy” in public.

The Family is Right

It is quite right that Ms. Remy’s friends and family are interfering with her quest to find a husband. As you can see in the works Austen (referenced frequently on The Courtship), Regency parents worked hard to make sure their daughters found the right man, both financially and socially. Mrs. Remy wouldn’t be excited about her son-in-law becoming a doctor. However, the wealthiest bachelors don’t need to work as they inherit their wealth.

It’s False: The Dates

The Courtship begins with Ms. Remy only interfacing with men in front her family. However, the show quickly departed from this rule. She had a group date once with six men. Later, she went on a one-on one with the man of her choice and walked away with him in full public view. She would have been chaperoned as a single woman and, if she was seen leaving the ballroom with someone other than her father or brother she would probably have to marry him.

Right and wrong: The Dresses

Regency dresses can be quite revealing, with low necklines and backlines. It’s no surprise that Ms. Remy would choose a similar off-the-shoulder ballgown to hers. However, bright red is a risky option for a young woman. Lady Whistledown would have been shocked by the deep-V in her yellow dress.
