This was not a bad experience, according to Paramount+’s ” the Offer, ” but an alert from the mafia.
Joseph Colombo, a crime boss, believed Mario Puzo’s “The Godfather” book was insulting to Italian Americans. Paramount did not agree to adapt it for the big screen.
It’s both hilarious and horrifying as Matthew Goode plays Evans as he runs out of town after telling Al Ruddy (played well by Miles Teller) to fix it.
The 10-episodes of “The Offer,” which debut April 28th, reveal that the pressure from the mafia wasn’t the only obstacle that Evans, Ruddy and the other players had to overcome in order to make the movie.
Goode said, “I couldn’t believe some stories.”
Patrick Gallo, who plays Puzo, says: “If you don’t love the movie, you won’t believe the things that went into it.”
Although “The Godfather”, is a extreme example, Colin Hanks plays one of Paramount’s suits, Gulf + Western. “The Offer,” however, gives a glimpse into Hollywood’s difficulties in making anything.
It’s a fascinating show for people who have seen ‘The Godfather and loved ‘The Godfather. They’re going be able to identify locations and characters and they’ll also get some insight into how the film was made. Even if you haven’t seen “The Godfather”, I think it’s an interesting look at how difficult it is.
It also shows just how unpredictable Hollywood can be.
“I have spoken to highly acclaimed filmmakers and they made incredible films and assumed they would be able make whatever film they want to. Teller said that they couldn’t. You’d be amazed at how quickly enthusiasm fades for movie stars even if they don’t have a hit. Someone once said to me, “In this business nobody cares about what you did two-years ago.” I disagree. It’s a constant testing ground.
“The Offer” portrays Ruddy as a hero, who stood firm in protecting Francis Ford Coppola’s creative vision while facing criticism from all sides. It shows how Coppola wanted Al Pacino, an off-Broadway actor, to play the role of Michael Corleone. This was much to Evans’ dismay and that of Gulf + Western. He thought Marlon Brando was the perfect actor to play Don Corleone even though Brando was too unpredictable at the time. Ruddy persevered and made it happen.
“If he believed that somebody, and if he said he had your back,” he did. Teller said that he had it right up to the end.
Ruddy was the film’s sole producer, which is rare in Hollywood today. However, his support system included Bettye McCartt who was by his side every step.
Juno Temple portrays McCartt. She calls it “one the greatest honors” of her career to bring Ruddy’s and McCartt’s relationship to the screen. They were a couple who implicitly trusted one another.
You hear it all the time: “Men and women cannot be friends.” They can be best friends, and they can do amazing things together.
Dan Fogler plays Coppola and says that “The Offer” is a reminder about the director’s genius. He would love to have his approval.
“I wonder what he will think about all of this. He said, “I hope he gives his blessing to us.” (It is worth noting that Coppola dismissed the project and told Variety in March that “The offer” didn’t correspond to his memories of what actually happened.
Hollywood isn’t done with the story. The production of “Francis and the Godfather”, a movie about the rollercoaster ride to “The Godfather”, starring Oscar Isaac and Jake Gyllenhaal is underway.
