One thing is certain: Atlético de Madrid fans don’t have short memories. A few days after Real Madrid’s victory against Liverpool in the Champions League final, people came to snatch the plate in the name of Thibaut Courtois on the alley of legends, present near the Wanda Metropolitano stadium where he played 154 matches in total, with three consecutive loans coming from Chelsea between 2011 and 2014.
Before taking part in the final, the Belgian goalkeeper had drawn the wrath of the supporters of his former club: “If you face Real Madrid, you know that they win the final. Now I’m on the right side of history”, thus indirectly mentioning that lost with Atlético against Real in 2014.
In a city divided between Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid, the Mayor of the Community José Luis Martínez-Almeida wanted to respond to the multitudes of attacks by Thibaut Courtois against the Colchoneros: “Courtois gave me a lot of fun for years. But just one thing and let me tell you with love: on the bright side, there are also those of us who cried in Lisbon with you and by your side. We are all on the right side in this city,” he confided.
