Jay Leno talked about challenges and positives of caretaking for his wife Mavis Leno, who has advanced dementia, in the “In Depth with Graham Bensinger” podcast. He shared insights into being needed and taking care of her with humor despite his own health issues.
Leno, who has been married to Mavis since 1980, revealed her dementia diagnosis in 2024 and emphasized that he enjoys the time spent with her. He acknowledged the changes in their relationship over the past 45 years but expressed willingness and humor to deal with the situation.
Despite calling caretaking a challenge, Leno admitted that he liked being needed by his independent wife. He filed for a conservatorship in January 2024 to ensure her care and estate planning. The court-appointed counsel highlighted Mavis’ disorientation and cognitive impairment while praising her charming personality and reliance on Jay for protection and guidance.
After being granted the conservatorship, Leno ensured a safe and supportive environment for Mavis, emphasizing their long-term loving relationship. He also dealt with his own health issues, including burns, multiple fractures, and bruises from accidents.
